Suburban Station: Renovation

Daniel J. Keating Co. was the General Contractor on a multi-prime, multi-phase renovation of SEPTA’s Suburban Station, a circa-1930 underground train station that handles more than 100,000 commuters each weekday.

The project scope included over 3 square city blocks of extensive historical restoration to the interior of the station, installation of 8 new elevators for handicap accessibility, platform rehabilitation including upgraded lighting, warning tile installation and marble wall restoration.  The original ticket window was fully restored, new way-finding signage was installed, and entrances were updated and brightened to increase visibility and improve circulation.

Overall Cost / $40,000,000
Owner / SEPTA
Architect / Bower Lewis Thrower

The project was completed in 3 phases over a 3 year period while the station remained in operation. SEPTA’s desire to insure patron safety and minimize inconvenience to vendors and passengers required constant coordination and were critical factors in the successful completion of this project.
