Merion Mercy Academy Living and Learning Center

For this project, Keating demolished one of the school’s one-story wings (approximately 14,300 SF) to make way for the new two-story addition (approximately 23,000 SF). The addition and renovations to the school provide updated spaces for learning and collaborating. On the first floor, you will find a new Gymnasium, Locker Room and Showers, Restroom Facilities, Kitchen and Food Prep Areas, Food Court / Cafeteria, and a Multi-purpose Room. On the second floor, you will find a new Guidance Center Suite, a Conference Room, a Maker’s Space / Multi-purpose Room, two Art Rooms, and Common / Support Spaces.

The exterior of the school also received new landscaping and parking. The new construction and extensive upgrades to the school were accomplished in a 15-month period.

Challenges

Performing construction activities while school was in session was an on-going challenge. Efforts to control noise, coordinate deliveries, and maintain a safe site between workers and school students and employees played a vital part in the successful completion of this project.

Solutions

Constant and open communication was essential. Weekly meetings were held with the school to ensure all parties involved were pleased with the progress and that expectations with regard to noise, vehicular traffic, and safety were being met. Daily meetings were held before the start of each day between contractor and subcontractors to re-emphasize the importance to maintain these objectives and to also convey any changes to the school’s schedule or needs that day.
