Commodore Barry Elementary School: New Construction

The original Commodore John Barry Elementary School was demolished in order to accommodate the new school on the same site. The new four-story 94,415 SF facility serves an enrollment of 646 students, grades pre-k through 8.

Overall Cost / $34,000,000
Owner / School District of Philadelphia
Architect / Sheward Partnership
Project Status / Completed August 2008

The building is a steel-frame, metal panel construction with a concrete stair tower on cast-auger pile foundations. Challenges to the construction team on this project included a tight location in a thriving neighborhood, bounded on all sides by row homes.

Commodore Barry Elementary School achieved LEED™ Silver Certification by the US Green Building Council.
