Philadelphia Police Department: Forensic Science Center

The Forensic Science Center, located within a 1920’s Art Deco building at 8th & Poplar Streets, is a state-of-the-art forensics facility and benchmark sustainability project for the Philadelphia Police Department.

The facility contains a Firearms Unit with a shooting range for ballistics analysis, a Crime Scene Unit for 24/7 evidence gathering, chemistry labs for drug analysis, and a DNA lab for hair, blood, and fiber analysis.

Some of the challenges presented to the construction team included a building that had been vacant for 10 years, and specialized structural repairs to ensure the building’s safety.

The Forensic Science Center is a LEED Certified project, and received the AIA National Committee on the Environment’s Top Ten Green Projects Award in 2006.
