One of the most advanced high schools ever conceived, the School of the Future is the result of a unique collaboration between the School District of Philadelphia and Microsoft Corp. The school, which enrolls about 750 students in grades 9-12, is a state-of-the-art example of a progressive and research-based curriculum, integrated technology, and environmentally advanced construction. The project is 162,000 square feet, and covers nearly eight acres on the edge of Fairmount Park at 4021 Parkside Ave. A steel structure with white brick façade, the high-tech building was completed within the strict confines of a standard urban public-school budget. It is certified LEED Silver, demonstrating unsurpassed attention to environmental design and construction. It utilizes natural lighting, water conservation and recycling, and even cabinets made from trees removed from the site.
